Standing on the Promises of God
In uncertain times we need something certain we can stand firm on-something we can trust. But in this world, especially the world as it stands today-nothing is certain; everything is changing. We can’t put our trust in riches, homes, lands—they will all pass away. (We are told not to make these our treasure here on earth where moth and rust destroy anyway: Matthew 6:19-20) Sadly, even family and friends are not certain in this world. So what can we stand firm on?
There is one thing that will not pass away till the heavens and the earth pass, and that is God’s word, especially His promises! (Not even “one jot or tittle of His word will pass away!” Matthew 5:18) If there is one thing that can be trusted in this confusing world, it is God’s promises to His children. They never fail. If He promises you He will do something; God will not lie, because He does not lie! You can trust with 100 percent certainty that if God says in His word something will come to pass—it will.
It has been said that there are anywhere from 3000-8000 promises in the Bible. I don’t personally know if this number is accurate but if it’s even close, that’s an awful lot of hope found in the pages of the Bible! What I do know for certain is the trustworthiness of those promises; because I have tried God, and I have never been let down or disappointed.
Now, He doesn’t always fulfill His promise the very moment I pray, or even that day, week or year; but in His right time, He will. Just as Abraham and Sarah had to wait on God for the child He promised, we sometimes too have to exercise patience in waiting for our promise. But don’t grow faint while waiting: remember God says “they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
I have chosen to take God’s word as the One source of truth, as being real and applicable for my life even today as much as it was for the men and women found in its pages, and God has shown Himself to me to be trustworthy, never once failing me in any way! That is definitely more than I can say for the things of this world, which will all eventually disappoint and fail us.
When God says: “the Lord shall help [the righteous], and deliver them: ...and save them, because they trust in Him.” (Psalm 37:40), He means what He promises. If you trust in Him, He will (not might or may, but will) fight for you!
When He tells us: “the Lord redeems the soul of His servants and none of them that trust in Him shall be desolate.” (Psalm 34:22) He means that too...even if you have lost your job, or the future seems uncertain, you can take this promise to God just as you would take a trustworthy check to the bank, ready to be cashed... and God will come through!
When we read in Psalm 34:4: “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears,” insert your name and your fears into the spaces where God says the words “me” and “fears,” because this promise is as much for you as it was for the Psalmist many years ago! God’s word is alive and active, possessing as much, if not more power today than it ever has before.
When I open my Bible it is filled with yellow highlighted passages. These are my “rays of hope.” These are the many promises that I have found while searching God’s word for specific answers to my specific problems over the years. Now, today my Bible is covered in these yellow promises! I know that when I come across one of these passages I can close my eyes and silently just between God and I, ask Him to fulfill what the verse says it will do in my life, and at that very moment I can trust that God will not fail me...because He never has and He never will. You can trust God too. He is the same for me as He is for you and millions of others who have chosen to take Him at His word!
So today, if you are looking into something you can invest in: don’t look to gold; Roth funds; a piece of land where you can flee to in a time of trouble or even to a spouse or trusted friend to see you through hard times; look to God’s word. It is filled with “yellow rays of hope,” in the form of precious promises that are better than any earthly check or savings account! As the banks close their doors, jobs dissolve, friends turn their backs, husbands and wives leave their families, and the world all but seems to crumble around you...God’s promises; His word, is the one thing that will stand the test of time and the one thing you can trust!
