God Speaks Through Catfish
One summer while out paddling around a lake, our son came across something bobbing on the surface of the water. Uncertain what it was he decided to pull up the line attached to it, and there struggling to pull away was a five pound catfish stuck on a hook!
We laughed, at how fortunate this fish was to have been caught by a boy who doesn’t eat meat, and had no desire to harm him; but instead freed the hook from his mouth and sent him back to the lake free! Many fisherman would have been quite jealous at such a catch!
How often do we feel trapped, floating aimlessly, yet unable to free ourselves from some snare the Devil has hooked us with? Maybe it’s a “pet” sin that we just don’t seem able to quit doing, or maybe it’s a cherished “bad habit,” that we were snared with long before our walk with the Lord, yet it found it’s way into our lives and even into our Christianity. Maybe it’s unkind speech, unhealthy eating, gossip or anger, or something darker and more secretive. Whatever it is, much the same way we found this fish, it has us hooked and we are unable to swim away from it.
However, if we choose to follow the catfish’s example, who found release in the right hands, we can too! If we turn to Jesus and stay committed to follow His way, Jesus is waiting to free us and never desires to hurt us. He wants to take the hooks out of our lives and set us free in Him, if only we will let Him!
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
