Time to Stay Vigilant; Watch and Pray
Updated: May 6
Jackson had some very close calls this week, and we are praising God for His angels of protection! While out moving a tarp to get some scrap wood underneath, he saw something black along the edge and thought it was an interesting shape...he went to pick it up then noticed it’s form closer and saw the tail...it was a scorpion! We disposed of him quickly. Then, another night as he was going to bed, while walking in his room his eye caught something move on the floor near his foot; this time it was a tarantula.
It got me thinking. Most days Tony is busy with getting things repaired on the runway so the planes can resume flying and the many other tasks related to our mission here, while Jax and I stay busy with everyday life...homeschool, cooking, cleaning and various other mission projects. When it comes time to rest the truth is, we live in a very beautiful place...the mission house where we are staying is situated beside the edge of dense jungle forest. We can sit on our porch and watch foxes run across the runway; lizards chasing bugs; and Mackaws and parrots come across our front yard every morning and evening. We get to see just about every type of bird imaginable here! It can feel like a peaceful paradise...at times.
This is like many peoples lives. We busy ourselves with day to day tasks; we work, we play, we enjoy the beauty of nature, or for some it’s the entertainment of the world. But, all the while there are things happening behind the scenes we aren’t aware of. There are principalities and powers at work in all of our lives. Danger can lie just around the corner, whether we realize it or not. There is a real battle going on in this world between the forces of good and the forces of evil. If you don’t believe it, turn on the nightly news, you wouldn’t have to watch long to see that destruction, distraction and confusion are increasing. But it can be easy to be lulled into unawareness.
For us, we forget sometimes that though our new home is beautiful and serene, it is also filled with many dangers. The tarantulas, scorpions and poisonous snakes don’t always present themselves in the open areas...they generally remain hidden and when we are least expecting it, is when we have encountered them.
That’s how the devil works in most of our lives. People are lulled into thinking things are going well, they keep themselves busy with many things, when one day calamity strikes. Maybe their home is threatened by a wildfire, their marriage is suddenly on the brink of divorce, a loved one passes, cancer or some other diseases strikes from out of nowhere...these are the very attacks the devil loves to hurl at people. His plan is to keep us lulled and busy, unaware of the dangers around us.
But, God gives us the solution. Jesus tells us to “Watch and pray.” (Luke 21:34-36) Stay vigilant, because our adversary the devil is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). Now is not the time to let our guard down. Instead, it’s time to sharpen our sword by staying in the Word of God; increase our connection, by getting on our knees more often in prayer; and fight the fight of faith through obedience to God’s call on our lives— everyday. Stay close to the Source, and keep a watchful eye out for the devil’s snares and tricks...don’t allow yourself to be lulled into sleepiness or fall into distraction...no matter how beautiful the scenery is!
